Innocent Kwitonda, Evangelist

Background and family

Age: 28. Married to Julienne. Father of two. Evangelist in Buvira parish, Nyiragongo.

“I am the fourth in my family. 26 years ago, when I was 2, my father was kidnapped and we have not buried him to this day. The thieves looted almost everything after his death. We remained unhappy and grew up suffering and even going to school was difficult. I remember one day when I was 9 years old when I was sent home from school because I had not yet paid school fees. When I arrived home my mother was sick, I went into my mother's room and I found an old Bible that my father used in his ministry because he was a pastor among the 7th day Adventists. There and then I made a personal oath with God, “Lord Jesus Christ I know that my father served you faithfully, you loved him and brought him back to you, help me to study and when I grow up I will serve you faithfully and I will proclaim you in all nations. That day God performed a miracle and there was a woman who gave me school fees and I returned to school the following day; until this day the Lord has continued to provide.

Conversion and calling

On the night of June 18 2007 that I had the privilege of meeting the King of my heart the personal love of my life Jesus Christ; I was sleeping in my room and during the night my mother as usual sang the Kinyarwanda song number 156 which said: “it is I Jesus Christ who gave himself on the cross because of love to save you. My brother I gave myself to the cross and you what did you give me?” Listening to these words, it was as if someone was whispering in my ears, suddenly I started to cry; with tears in my eyes, everyone in the family was surprised at the phenomenon I was going through. I was 12 years old at the time, my mother prayed for me and we went to sleep.

During the night I had a dream which made me ask myself a thousand and one questions and until today the image of this dream always comes back. The scene of this dream was that I crossed a sandy and marshy road, and this road led to the mountain and I heard the sound of instruments like when we sing hymns. With enthusiasm I wanted to see who sang these hymns and when I wanted to approach the mountain, I saw a man dressed in a white cassock and his face was shining very brightly and when he saw me, he called me by my name and gave me a scroll containing the Scriptures and he showed me a village very far away with his stick and told me to bring them this scroll. It was the end of my dream.

In the morning I explained to my mother what happened at night in my dream and she told me to go see the pastor. I went to see the pastor and I explained the phenomenon to him, he told me that it was the Lord Jesus Christ who called me and who wants to use me. I confessed my sins and he made me repeat the prayer to receive Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour.

Ministry and Bible school

I began to regularly attend Sunday school at the local church, where I became a Sunday school teacher and then I began to lead the choir and the Sunday school too. In 2017 I attended the Portable Bible School in evangelism which was organized in the village. I passed with distinction and the council of the local church offered to send me for training in evangelism and church planting at Lake Kivu Christian Centre. I passed with distinction and it was for me the beginning of the ministry of evangelist and missionary.

Since 2018 I have already trained 1714 lay pastors in the Portable Bible Schools, I have had the privilege of leading 25 Portable Bible Schools in almost in all the territories of North Kivu, and have planted 6 new churches. I have been a parish evangelist for 3 years in a parish at the foot of the volcano, Mount Nyiragongo. In June I was appointed as deputy director of the mission, evangelism and church-planting department in the diocese.

I am now in my third year of theological college because being a teacher and disciple-maker I wanted to know more to work better and to continue to shape my way of serving according to what is written in 2 Timothy 2:2 “And what you have heard about me in the presence of many witnesses, confide to them to faithful men, capable of teaching them to others.”
